Where is Mabul Island Semporna?

Have you ever heard of the Coral Triangle? Well, Mabul Island is located in the area! The Coral Triangle refers to the marine region spanning six countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste. If you're an ocean enthusiast, this place is a must-know!
According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), at least 500 species of reef-building corals may be found in this richly biodiverse area. Of these, 76% (605) of all coral species worldwide—or 798—are located in the Coral Triangle. Many people, especially coastal communities, rely on coral reef ecosystems for food and livelihoods.
Where's Mabul Island?
Mabul Island is a magnificent heaven nestled within an archipelago. A mere 45-minute speedboat ride from Semporna transports you to this mystical island. Mabul Island is a mere 15-minute speedboat journey from Sipadan Island, renowned as the "Aquarium of God", yet boasts a vastly different natural landscape in such close proximity.
Today, Mabul Island hosts two water resorts. As you leisurely stroll along the wooden bridges of these overwater retreats, you'll find beautiful corals and vibrant schools of fish beneath you. If you decide to set foot on the island, you'd realize that every corner is a picture-perfect moment waiting to capture.
While half of the island is dedicated to resorts, the other half is home to the Bajau, the world's last sea nomads. Known as sea gypsies, they seamlessly integrate with the island's resorts, together painting the unique scenery of Semporna, where indigenous culture merges with coastal beauty. Exploring around the island, you can feel the ancient fishing and hunting traditions passed down through millennia, alongside a deep reverence and respect for nature.
Why is it famous?
Since 2004, Mabul Island, located just 15 kilometers from Sipadan Island, has emerged as the primary hub for diving expeditions to the renowned 'Aquarium of the Gods.' This shift occurred after all resorts on Sipadan were dismantled and relocated, following government regulations aimed at preserving the area's diverse marine life. As time passed, more islands (Mabul, Kapalai, etc.) have built resorts, serving as bases for diving trips to Sipadan.
Later on, Maibu Island gained fame for its small, rare, and unusual marine life. Efforts are made by all parties to conserve this rich underwater world, carefully avoiding disruptions to its ecosystems. Unlike Sipadan, which boasts abundant mid-level and large marine life, Mabul Island's charm lies in its microcosmic world. Many divers think the challenge of finding a camouflaged frogfish and hidden harlequin shrimp here is far more satisfying than bumping into a giant school of fish.
Muck diving has attracted countless explorers to discover various fascinating "little things." Though the name might not sound captivating, muck diving is incredibly valuable! It involves diving in muddy environments at sandy or silty dive sites, searching for bizarre-looking critters. You'll witness extraordinary camouflage and mimicry skills as well as the use of vivid colours to frighten off would-be predators. Throughout the process, you'll face the challenge of slowing down and broadening your perspective! Your diving memories will turn into unique treasure hunts!
